People become so used to the taste, the caffeine kick, and the habit of drinking coffee each day that they don’t realize how much they’re consuming. Taking in too much coffee is dangerous, especially in the summer. But that brings up the question, exactly how much is too much?

Side Effects of Too Much Coffee

The side effects of too much coffee come in two types; short term and long term. Little time, you’ll notice symptoms of drinking too much coffee such as headache, jitters, insomnia, and irritability. If you’re a frequent over the user of coffee though, the long-term damage is much more dangerous. Studies show that people who consume too much coffee regularly are at a higher risk for heart disease. You’re also at a higher risk for hypertension and stroke. During the summer months, coffee increases the risk for life-threatening conditions such as heat stroke. The caffeine acts as a diuretic, causing you to become dehydrated very quickly.

How Much is Too Much?

Experts recommend sticking to less than 5 cups of coffee per day. The long-term risks we discussed above were observed in people who regularly drank 6 or more cups per day. One “cup” refers to roughly 75 milligrams of caffeine, so the actual amount will vary depending on the caffeine content of your favorite brew. This is only a rough estimate of how much is too much, but everybody is different. People who are predisposed to hypertension and heart disease will have to decrease the amount of coffee that’s considered safe for them.

Keeping Track

To determine how much coffee you drink on average, you need to keep track. Every iced coffee, Frappuccino, latte, and mug that you drink should be recorded. Include an estimate of the caffeine content in each beverage too. You’ll probably be shocked by the results! Many people don’t realize exactly how much coffee they’re drinking until they see it totaled up.
If you discover you’re drinking too much coffee and you want to cut back, you’ll have to do it gradually. A sudden drop in your coffee intake will cause severe caffeine withdrawal and very unpleasant symptoms. Be honest with your doctor about how much coffee you have each day and ask them what amount they’d recommend is safe for you.
